Before you undergo surgery, your surgeon may refer you to physical therapy for pre-operative rehabilitation, commonly referred to as “prehab.” This type of rehabilitation is important for establishing a baseline with your physical therapist and potentially improving your range of motion, strength, and functional capacity before your surgery. Some injuries and surgeries warrant a couple of sessions of prehab, while others call for a few weeks.
Some surgeons recommend prehab before undergoing ACL reconstruction surgery. There has been research performed that has shown that performing prehab before ACL surgery can improve certain factors after surgery including strength and hopping. It’s also becoming common to perform prehab before surgeries such as knee replacements and hip replacements.
At Powered Up Physical Therapy, you will first receive a thorough initial evaluation to discuss your injury and/or condition that has led to your upcoming surgery. Your evaluation will also include a physical examination to determine your range of motion, strength, movement patterns, posture, etc. Based upon the findings of your evaluation, your physical therapist will use their clinical expertise and the best evidence available to devise a treatment plan for you to help you best prepare for surgery. You will also learn about what to expect after surgery and your physical therapist can help answer any questions you have regarding your planned post-operative rehabilitation.
Treatment plans for prehab may include manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, posture and ergonomic education, neuromuscular re-education, gait training, or other services to help you best prepare for surgery. Your physical therapist will work with you and collaborate with your surgeon to ensure that you reach your pre-operative goals.
