Physical Therapy for Pickleball in Norwood

Pickleball is becoming one of the most popular sports and forms of exercise in the US. People across the age spectrum play pickleball, from children playing at local gyms, to adults playing in local recreational leagues, to older adults playing with friends. Pickleball has become more accessible for people to participate in, with pickleball courts becoming increasingly more common in outdoor and indoor spaces. As a cross between tennis, ping pong, and badminton, it’s viewed by many as a fun way to exercise and be social.

Common Pickleball Injuries

Pickleball injuries can be due to overuse or can be more acute/traumatic in nature. Common injuries for pickleball players include:

  • Achilles tendon injuries
  • Muscle strains to the hamstrings, quadriceps, or calf
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Knee ligament or meniscus injuries
  • Wrist fractures from falling onto an outstretched hand
  • Pickleball elbow/tennis elbow

Treating Pickleball Injuries with Physical Therapy

At Powered Up Physical Therapy, you will first receive a thorough initial evaluation, which will include a discussion of the history of your pain and injury as well as a physical examination to determine your range of motion, strength, movement patterns, posture, etc. Based upon the findings of your evaluation, your physical therapist will use their clinical expertise and the best evidence available to devise a treatment plan for you. This treatment plan may include manual therapy to target specific joints and/or soft tissue structures, progressive therapeutic exercises, neuromuscular re-education to improve your muscle activation patterns, education about injury prevention, or other services to help you achieve your goals and get you back to playing pickleball safely. All treatments will be individualized to improve any strength and mobility deficits or improper movement patterns found during your evaluation, and your physical therapist will work to incorporate sport-specific exercises and drills into your plan of care.

Preventing Pickleball Injuries

Many pickleball players can benefit from an evaluation with a physical therapist. An evaluation can identify any mobility or strength deficits or improper movement patterns that could possibly increase the risk for injury. If a player is experiencing pain or discomfort when playing pickleball or if they have suffered a recent orthopedic injury either while playing pickleball or off the court, they may benefit from a physical therapy evaluation. At Powered Up Physical Therapy, we can teach you techniques and information to help prevent pickleball injuries and/or improve your mechanics. Ultimately, our goals are your goals - whether that’s to decrease your pain, improve your mobility and strength, learn how to prevent injuries, or get back to playing pickleball.
