What To Expect

What will my first physical therapy session involve?

Your first appointment, also called your physical therapy evaluation, will involve a discussion about the history of your injury or pain and your goals followed by a thorough physical examination. Your evaluation will also include a detailed explanation of your condition and your proposed treatment plan, and you will receive a home exercise program to begin to immediately address your injury or pain. We want to make sure that you leave your appointment with all of your questions answered and confidence that you have chosen the right physical therapist to help you.

What should I wear to physical therapy?

We recommend that you wear clothes that allow for freedom of movement, such as clothes that you would wear to exercise.

Do I need a prescription for physical therapy?

Under New Jersey law, you may seek physical therapy services without a prescription, which is called “direct access.” If you see a physical therapist via direct access, your physical therapist will refer you to another health care practitioner if they find that physical therapy should not be performed, if you have symptoms that are outside the scope of physical therapy, or if you do not show progress within 30 days of starting physical therapy. Additionally, your physical therapist will inform your health care practitioner of record about your plan of care within 30 days of starting physical therapy. If you don’t have a health care practitioner of record, your physical therapist will recommend a professional with whom to consult.

How long will my appointments be?

All appointments last about one hour. Your follow-up appointments will typically involve a combination of manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular re-education, and movement analysis.

Do you accept my insurance?

We are not in-network with any insurance plans except for Medicare, which allows us to spend more one-on-one time with you to ensure that you receive the best care. Because you will only work with a Doctor of Physical Therapy throughout your care, we can typically help you achieve your goals in less time than would be required at a clinic that is in-network.

We understand that going to an out-of-network provider can be more costly initially. However, by seeing an out-of-network provider, you get more one-on-one time with your physical therapist and you can typically achieve results in fewer visits.

Please note that we are currently working on becoming a participating provider of Medicare, which means that if you are a Medicare beneficiary, we will submit claims to Medicare.

How much are physical therapy services at Powered Up Physical Therapy?

If you have out-of-network benefits with your health insurance plan, we will provide you with a copy of your bill that you can, at your discretion, submit to your health insurance plan for reimbursement for the services your health insurance plan covers. You are responsible for contacting your insurance company to determine what your benefits are and obtain any necessary physician referrals and/or pre-authorizations for services. We are more than happy to provide you with helpful instructions for how to contact your insurance company and what to ask to determine if you have out-of-network benefits.

If you are a Medicare beneficiary, we will submit claims to Medicare.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, checks, or credit cards (Visa, American Express, MasterCard, or Discover) as forms of payment.

What’s your cancellation policy?

If you are unable to keep your appointment, kindly contact us at least 24 hours before your scheduled appointment to let us know. This allows us to contact other patients who may be waiting for an appointment. If you cancel less than 24 hours before your appointment, we do have a cancellation fee of $25. However, the fee will be waived if you reschedule your appointment to another day within the same business week.

Will I always be treated by the same physical therapist?

At Powered Up Physical Therapy, you will always be treated by the same physical therapist. This ensures consistency of care and allows us to establish trust with you.
