Physical Therapy for Elbow Pain in Norwood

Elbow Flexion

The elbow is a joint that is essential for allowing us to perform many daily activities such as feeding ourselves, getting dressed, and lifting objects. Elbow pain can greatly impact our ability to perform many of those daily tasks. When you experience elbow pain, it can come from a structure within the elbow, or the pain may be referred from other body parts such as your neck, shoulder, wrist, or hand. Many people have heard of tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow, which typically affect athletes. Little League elbow is also common in baseball players.

About Your Elbow

Your elbow is made of three stable joints between your arm (humerus) and forearm (radius and ulna). The elbow is supported by various muscles, tendons, and ligaments that together help you bend and straighten your elbow as well as turn your palm up and down.

What are Common Symptoms of Elbow Pain?

Elbow Range of Motion

Some people experience elbow pain due to overuse, such as with tennis/pickleball elbow or golfer’s elbow. Sometimes people experience elbow pain that actually comes from a structure in the neck, shoulder, or wrist.

Some symptoms of elbow pain may include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness and limited range of motion
  • Numbness/tingling in the arm
  • Weakness
  • Difficulty performing daily tasks such as feeding, dressing, gripping objects, or lifting objects

Your Initial Evaluation

During your first visit, you will receive a thorough initial evaluation, which will include a discussion of the history of your elbow pain or injury as well as a physical examination to determine your range of motion, strength, movement patterns, posture, etc. Your physical therapist will also evaluate whether your elbow pain is coming from your elbow or whether your pain is from other areas such as your neck, shoulder, or wrist. Based upon the findings of your evaluation, your physical therapist will use their clinical expertise and the best evidence available to devise a treatment plan for you.

Follow Up Treatments

Each visit will entail one hour of personalized treatment. Your physical therapist will track your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed. You will always receive a targeted home exercise program at the end of each session to perform in between sessions so you’re constantly working on improving your symptoms and addressing your strength and mobility.
